From America: Parts I and II

Description

From America: Parts I and II is Lukasz Liniewicz’s English translation of Gustav Adolf Wislicenus’s Aus Amerika (Leipzig: Otto Wigand, 1854).

The preface and nineteen letters follow Wislicenus’s departure from Germany, his travels through England and across the Atlantic, and his experiences in Boston. They examine religious freedom, free congregations, slavery and abolitionism, Theodore Parker and the Nebraska Bill, spiritualism, everyday American life, and prospects for German settlement in southern Brazil.

This English reading edition contains both parts, all nineteen letters, nine original notes and eleven clearly distinguished translator’s notes. Advertisements, duplicate wrappers and repeated printer’s notices are omitted. The cover reproduces the actual German wrapper of the first booklet; its historical German lettering is retained.
