Aus Amerika: Erstes und Zweites Heft

Description

Gustav Adolf Wislicenus’s Aus Amerika was published in Leipzig by Otto Wigand in 1854 in two booklets, with New York distribution through Carl F. Günther. The first booklet is subtitled Meine Reise nach Amerika, ihr Anlaß und ihr Verlauf.

Across a preface and nineteen letters, Wislicenus recounts his departure from Germany, his journey through England and across the Atlantic, and life in Boston. He discusses religious freedom and free congregations, abolitionism and slavery, Theodore Parker and the Nebraska Bill, spiritualism, American towns and country life, and prospects for German settlement in southern Brazil.

Available editions: the PDF is the complete historical bound scan (245 scanned pages), including repeated scan blocks, advertisements and other end matter. Its published table of contents follows the two booklets, preface and nineteen letters through that irregular scan sequence. The German EPUB is a separate reflowable reading edition, retaining the preface, both title pages, all letters and nine original notes, while omitting advertisements, duplicate wrappers and repeated printer’s notices. Historical spelling is retained. Its page references follow the separate 192-page transcription source, not the pagination of this PDF.

Editorial note: the EPUB was prepared from a native-vision transcription, with structural review and selected checks against the scan; it has not undergone complete word-for-word proofreading.

PDF source: Internet Archive bound copy. Another witness to the second booklet is available in Google Books.
