About the Author
Stow Persons (1913–2006) was an American intellectual historian who taught at Princeton and the University of Iowa, where he became Carver Professor of History emeritus. Trained at Yale under Ralph Henry Gabriel, he wrote Free Religion: An American Faith, a study of nineteenth-century New England free religious thinkers and their place in American culture. Persons also wrote American Minds and other works of American intellectual history.
