About the Author
My name is Andrew James Brown. I’m a philosophically/theologically inclined writer with sympathies towards Imaoka Shin’ichirō's understanding of a creative, inquiring, free and liberative religion/spirituality (jiyū shūkyō 自由宗教), Jōdo Shinshū Buddhism, Konkokyo, Christian non-theism, D. G. Leahy’s “thinking now occurring for the first time”, a Lucretian inspired religious naturalism, new materialism and Kyoto School philosophy; also a photographer, cyclist, walker and jazz bass player. In addition to this, I’m the minister of a small, liberal, free religious community in Cambridge (UK), Cambridge Unitarians.

A revised 2025 edition of selected essays by Imaoka Shin’ichirō (1881–1988), a major Japanese thinker associated with Free Religion (jiyū shūkyō), liberal religion, and interfaith understanding. The volume is translated by William and Dorothy Parker, Akiyama Kinuko, and Imaoka Shin’ichirō; collected and edited by George M. Williams; and co-edited by Andrew James Brown and Graham Driver.
The contents include a short biography and essays such as “What Is Free Religion?”, “My Spiritual Pilgrimage”, “What I Have Learned About Buddhism and Christianity”, “From Religious Freedom to Free Religion”, “My Free Religious Viewpoint”, “A Viewpoint on Free Religion”, “Who Is Christ?”, and texts related to the International Association for Religious Freedom (IARF).
