The Free Religion Institute represents IARF's commitment to fostering liberal religious thought and education. Taking inspiration from Rev. Dr. Imaoka's wisdom, we recognize that learning is a lifelong journey - one that transcends formal education and embraces the continuous pursuit of understanding across religious traditions, cultures, and philosophies.
As we embark on this ambitious journey, we begin with humble steps but clear vision. Our mission is to create an accessible platform where IARF members and all those interested in liberal religion can explore, learn, and grow together. We don't aim to replace formal education but rather to provide resources and opportunities for continuous learning and development throughout life's journey.
All registered members of the IARF Community Platform have free and unrestricted access to our growing collection of courses and resources.
Flexible learning opportunities through self-paced courses, live sessions, and interactive workshops, designed to accommodate different learning styles and schedules.
A growing collection of carefully curated resources, from historical texts to contemporary research, supporting both personal exploration and scholarly research.
An integrated platform where members can connect, share insights, and participate in discussions that enrich our understanding of liberal religion.
Free Religion represents a unique approach to spiritual and religious life - one that values freedom of thought, individual conscience, and the pursuit of truth without dogmatic constraints. It emerged from the recognition that spiritual growth often transcends traditional boundaries and benefits from open dialogue between different traditions and perspectives.
Our educational initiative builds on IARF's 125-year legacy of promoting religious freedom and interfaith understanding. We seek to explore how different liberal religious traditions approach fundamental questions about life, meaning, and human potential.
We are developing a flexible, multi-layered approach to education that honors both traditional wisdom and contemporary insights. While our offering is currently in its early stages, we are building a comprehensive platform that will serve various learning needs and styles.
Online courses allowing participants to explore materials at their own rhythm, integrating study with their daily lives and responsibilities.
Live online classes and webinars featuring discussions with instructors and fellow learners from around the world.
Discussion forums and study groups where participants can share insights and explore topics together.
Our courses and resources are being developed gradually, with new offerings added regularly. We invite our community to grow with us and contribute to shaping our educational journey.
At the heart of our initiative is the development of a comprehensive digital library dedicated to liberal religious thought and practice. This growing repository will serve as a valuable resource for both individual study and scholarly research.
The library will continue to expand through carefully curated additions, including both public domain materials and works shared with permission from copyright holders. We particularly welcome contributions from IARF member organizations and scholars in the field of liberal religion.
As we grow, we envision expanding our activities to include:
Prof. George M. Williams, a distinguished historian of religions, guides the Free Religion Institute as its Programme Coordinator. His extensive experience in studying religions that liberate, combined with his deep understanding of various religious traditions, provides valuable direction for our educational initiative.
Throughout his career, Prof. Williams has made significant contributions to religious studies, particularly in understanding the Hindu Renaissance, religion in modern Japan, and religion in Hawaii. His work has been recognized with honorary doctorates from Starr King School for the Ministry and the United Protestant Theological School of Cluj, Romania.
While we are at the beginning of this exciting venture, we invite you to be part of our growing community. All registered members of the IARF Community Platform can access our developing resources and participate in shaping the future of liberal religious education.
